Luxury Cars from Showroom Occupy Bengaluru's New Parking Lot
Luxury Cars Occupy New Bengaluru Parking Lot

Bengaluru: The newly inaugurated multi-level car parking (MLCP) complex at Gandhi Bazaar is facing controversy as luxury cars from a nearby showroom are occupying a significant portion of the facility. The complex, which can accommodate around 120 cars, was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on May 1. However, visitors have reported that many luxury cars from a showroom in Basavanagudi are parked there, reducing availability for the general public.

Public Concerns Raised

A social media user posted photographs of the luxury cars, highlighting that the public parking purpose is being defeated. The user noted that many vehicles had to return due to lack of slots, even though the LED board indicated around 90 available spaces. The post urged authorities to investigate the matter.

Showroom's Response

When contacted, staff from the showroom confirmed that they have rented an entire floor, comprising 24 parking slots, by paying a monthly fee to the parking contractor. They claimed to have been paying for two months and had installed a board indicating reserved parking. However, they noted that other cars were still occupying their slots.

Authorities Take Action

The MLCP complex was built under the Bengaluru Smart City project and later transferred to the Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC). Pradeep Kumar, Executive Engineer of BCCC's Chickpet division, stated that an inspection has been ordered. He mentioned that a show-cause notice has been issued to the parking contractor, as sub-letting of parking space is not approved by the corporation.

Parking Rules

Kumar explained that monthly payment plans are available for individual car owners, not for companies. He added that the response to the new facility has been below expectations, and more cars are expected as publicity increases. He also emphasized the need for better traffic enforcement to encourage paid parking usage.
