New Delhi: Lieutenant Governor T S Sandhu has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to prepare a comprehensive roadmap to transform Dwarka sub-city into a decentralised economic hub and a major destination for domestic and global investments.
Plans for Other Sub-Cities
Similar plans are also being drawn up for DDA’s other sub-cities — Rohini and Narela — as part of a broader strategy to boost investment, create job opportunities and ensure balanced urban growth across the capital.
Review of Developmental Initiatives
During a recent meeting with senior DDA officials, the LG reviewed developmental initiatives aimed at unlocking the economic potential in Dwarka and other sub-cities. Noting that improved infrastructure and connectivity have significantly enhanced their prospects, he cited the operationalisation of Urban Extension Road-II, the expanding Metro network, implementation of the transit-oriented development policy, upcoming education hubs and the rapid growth of these areas as key residential destinations.
Strategic assets such as Yashobhoomi at Dwarka, the proposed diplomatic enclave and large investment-ready DDA land parcels further boost the potential of the sub-cities to evolve into decentralised economic centres, said an official.
Time-Bound Plan Sought
The LG has sought a comprehensive and time-bound plan from officials at the earliest. “DDA officials were asked to examine the possibility of attracting non-polluting sectors, such as IT and IT-enabled services, healthcare, global capability centres and digital infrastructure industries, to set up operations in these areas,” said the official. With enhanced connectivity to the main city and proximity to the airport through newly-developed road networks, the sub-cities could also emerge as hubs for data centres, semiconductor units and warehousing in line with Master Plan provisions, he added.
According to officials, the LG said such a transformation would help Delhi reclaim investment opportunities that have increasingly shifted to other cities, while also generating employment, boosting revenues and promoting sustainable urban development.
Major Infrastructure Projects in Dwarka
DDA is advancing major infrastructure projects in Dwarka, focusing on public-private partnerships via the Swiss Challenge method, including a 600-bed super-speciality hospital (Sector 9), a five-star hotel (Sector 23) and a luxury commercial mall (Sector 22). These sites, given on licence for 55 years, are expected to generate revenue of Rs 29,700 crore in that period, or Rs 540 crore per year.
Other key development projects in progress include a 200-acre Bharat Vandana Park, a 173-acre Golf Course (Sector 24) and enhanced connectivity via UER-II and Dwarka Expressway.
