IGL Vows Uninterrupted Gas Supply for Delhi Amid Global Energy Turmoil
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has issued a firm assurance to consumers in Delhi and the National Capital Region that the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for household cooking and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles will continue without any disruption. This commitment comes despite significant volatility in global energy markets, which has been triggered by the escalating military conflict in the Middle East involving Israel, Iran, and other regional actors.
Government Regulation Ensures Priority Status
The company's assurance is reinforced by the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, which was officially issued on March 9. According to reports from news agency ANI, this government mandate places the supply of natural gas to Domestic PNG and CNG in the top priority category. This regulatory framework provides a solid foundation for IGL to maintain consistent service even during international supply challenges.
In an official statement, IGL emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring uninterrupted natural gas supply for both households and the transport sector, strictly in line with government directives. The company explicitly stated: "Accordingly we would like to assure the uninterrupted supply of Domestic PNG for household cooking and CNG for fueling for public transport and private vehicles to maintain urban mobility as per the government mandate and availability of natural gas supply."
Customer Service Remains Central Focus
Beyond mere supply assurances, IGL has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining high service standards while keeping customer needs at the forefront of its operations. The company added: "IGL remains persistent in its commitment to excellence, ensuring that customer service is at the heart of every endeavour we undertake." This dual focus on reliability and quality service aims to provide consumers with both security and satisfaction during uncertain times.
Global Energy Market Volatility Creates Challenges
The timing of IGL's assurance is particularly significant as global energy markets are experiencing heightened instability due to disruptions in crude oil and natural gas supplies linked to ongoing Middle East tensions. Industry developments indicate that crude oil supply has been substantially affected by the escalating military conflict, pushing benchmark prices such as Brent crude to approximately USD 100 per barrel.
Supplies of natural gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are also facing considerable challenges due to disruptions in critical maritime trade routes. One of the most pressing concerns is the virtual closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping corridor for energy supplies.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is recognized as a critical maritime chokepoint that handles nearly 20 percent of global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trade. Any significant disruption along this route can profoundly impact the movement of natural gas and related energy commodities across international markets. This geographical vulnerability underscores the importance of IGL's proactive measures and government-backed priority status to safeguard domestic energy security.
Despite these international pressures, IGL's structured approach and regulatory support position it to navigate the current energy landscape effectively, ensuring that Delhi's residents and transport systems remain powered without interruption.
