Goa Civil Supplies Department Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal LPG Usage

The Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs in Goa has launched a rigorous enforcement campaign, resulting in the seizure of 42 LPG cylinders during inspections conducted across the state since March 1. This decisive action aims to curb the misuse of domestic gas supplies and prevent hoarding activities that could disrupt essential services.

Details of the Seizures and Inspections

Deputy Director Amit Sawant provided specific details regarding the confiscated cylinders. Four domestic LPG cylinders were discovered being used by two restaurants in Porvorim, which violates regulations as these cylinders are intended for household consumption only. Additionally, 38 commercial cylinders were found stored in a secluded area in Saligao, raising concerns about potential black marketing or unauthorized stockpiling.

Sawant emphasized that the department has filed First Information Reports (FIRs) at the respective police stations to ensure legal follow-up on these violations. The inspections covered a wide range of establishments, with officials checking 178 restaurants and commercial entities throughout Goa to enforce compliance with LPG usage guidelines.

Government Measures to Ensure Supply Stability

In response to potential supply disruptions, the Goa government has implemented proactive measures. Last week, nodal officers were appointed to monitor LPG stocks and deliveries across all talukas. These officers are tasked with overseeing LPG distributors to ensure proper crowd management and prevent hoarding and black marketing practices.

Sawant reported positive outcomes from these initiatives, noting that crowding outside gas agencies has been almost entirely controlled. LPG dealers have been complying with government-issued instructions, contributing to a more orderly distribution system. The department's efforts focus on safeguarding domestic supply chains and maintaining accessibility for legitimate consumers.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Vigilance

This crackdown highlights the state's commitment to consumer protection and regulatory enforcement. By targeting illegal usage and storage, authorities aim to prevent shortages and price manipulation in the LPG market. The department continues to monitor the situation closely, with inspections expected to remain a key tool in ensuring compliance and transparency in the supply chain.
