Central Railway has initiated its first automobile freight operations from Igatpuri, marking a significant milestone in the transportation of vehicles by rail. A total of 100 cars have been loaded for transportation in 25 New Modified Goods (NMG) wagons, which are specifically designed for the safe and efficient transport of vehicles.
Details of the Inaugural Operation
The operation began at the Igatpuri railway station in Maharashtra, where the NMG wagons were loaded with cars destined for various locations. These wagons feature advanced securing mechanisms and cushioned interiors to prevent damage during transit, ensuring that vehicles arrive in pristine condition.
Benefits of Rail-Based Automobile Transport
This move by Central Railway is expected to reduce the reliance on road transport for vehicle logistics, offering a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative. Rail transport also helps in decongesting highways and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with the government's push for sustainable logistics.
Central Railway officials stated that the service will be expanded in phases, with plans to connect major automobile manufacturing hubs across the country. The NMG wagons have been customized to accommodate a wide range of vehicle sizes, from compact cars to SUVs.
Industry Reaction
The automobile industry has welcomed this development, noting that rail freight can significantly lower logistics costs and improve delivery timelines. Manufacturers are expected to utilize this service for both domestic distribution and export-oriented shipments.
With this initiative, Central Railway aims to capture a larger share of the automobile logistics market, which has traditionally been dominated by road transport. The railway is also exploring partnerships with carmakers to set up dedicated freight corridors for vehicle transport.
