Gautam Adani Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Women on International Women's Day
Marking International Women's Day, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani delivered a moving tribute to the women who have profoundly shaped his personal life and monumental business journey. In a detailed reflection shared on LinkedIn, Adani emphasized that the very foundations of his success were built upon the strength, enduring values, and unwavering support he drew from his family, particularly the women within it.
The Enduring Influence of a Mother's Lessons
Adani began by honoring his mother, Shantaben Adani, recalling how stories from Indian epics like the Ramayana during his childhood instilled core values of courage, sacrifice, and duty. He shared that he only later grasped the depth of these lessons when, at just 16 years old, he left home for Mumbai to forge his own career.
"As a child I did not fully understand the depth of that sacrifice. I could not yet grasp what it meant for a mother to stand there and watch her son walk away into an uncertain future," Adani wrote, drawing a parallel to the story of Kaushalya from the Ramayana. "My mother let me go. A mother who had given her youngest child everything she could, and then found the courage to let him walk into the unknown." He mused that perhaps every Indian mother carries a little of Kaushalya's quiet strength within her.
A Wife's Sacrifice and a Foundation's Impact
Adani then turned to his wife, Priti Adani, describing her as the keeper of his conscience. He noted that when they married, Priti was a qualified dentist with a promising career ahead, yet she chose a different path.
"She stepped away from her profession and in many ways from her own identity to dedicate her life to building the Adani Foundation," he stated. What began as a small initiative has now grown to touch over 10 million lives across 22 states in India, working in critical areas such as:
- Education and skill development
- Healthcare access and services
- Creating sustainable livelihoods
- Community development projects
Adani shared that every evening, Priti typically has a story waiting for him—a story of changed futures, renewed hope, and new opportunities, which continually grounds and inspires him.
Fresh Perspectives from the Next Generation
The industrialist also warmly acknowledged his daughters-in-law for bringing new energy into the family. He described Paridhi Adani, wife of his elder son Karan, as a remarkable, thoughtful, and sharp lawyer who engages across an extraordinary range of subjects.
Of Diva Adani, wife of his younger son Jeet, he said she expresses herself differently as one of the most imaginative designers he knows. "What I admire most is her deep compassion and her commitment to working with the specially-abled, using her creativity to make a real difference in their lives," Adani added.
The Ultimate Purpose: A Future for the Next Generation
Adani spoke fondly of his three granddaughters, calling them the "apples of his eye" whose curiosity reminds him how simple and beautiful the world looks through a child's eyes. This perspective, he said, clarifies his life's work.
"A man can spend his life building ports, airports, power plants and businesses. He can spend decades chasing scale, ambition and progress. But when a granddaughter climbs on to his lap and looks at him with complete trust in her eyes, everything becomes clear," he reflected.
In conclusion, Adani reiterated his core philosophy: "I have always lived between two worlds, work and family. And everything I have built in the first world was made possible because of the strength I draw from the second. The strongest foundations in life are not built with concrete or steel, but by the people who shape who we become." He expressed that while entrepreneurs may build infrastructure and companies, the ultimate purpose remains creating a future worthy of the next generation.
