The Prayagraj administration is taking decisive steps to address the persistent issue of contaminated water supply in the city. Although the city does not face a shortage of drinking water, frequent complaints about water quality have prompted action.
Pipe Replacement Plan
General Manager of the Prayagraj Jalkal Department, Sanjeev Kumar, announced that the process of replacing dilapidated pipes will soon be undertaken. Engineers from all zones have prepared reports, which will be submitted to the Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner. The replacement work will commence based on their directives.
Project Cost and Scope
This project will entail an expenditure of over Rs 15 crore. Approximately 30 to 40 kilometers of the city's drinking water pipeline network has become old and dilapidated. Prayagraj currently comprises 100 wards, with more than 60 of them having old drinking water supply lines. The department plans to replace worn-out pipes in neighborhoods where the infrastructure was laid 20 to 30 years ago, particularly in the old city areas.
Cause of Contamination
Leakages in these old pipes are the primary cause of the contaminated water supply issue. The city currently consumes 404 MLD (million liters per day) of water, supplied through 664 tube wells and a pipeline network spanning 1,600 kilometers.
The administration expects that replacing the dilapidated pipes will significantly improve water quality and eliminate health risks for residents.
