The Nagpur police have successfully apprehended four individuals, among them a minor and a known history-sheeter, in connection with a significant burglary at a jewellery and steel shop. The stolen valuables were valued at over Rs 42 lakh. The incident occurred between 4:30 am and 6:00 am on May 8 at IC Chowk in Gedam Layout.
Details of the Burglary
According to police reports, unidentified burglars forced open the shutter locks of the establishment and escaped with gold ornaments, silver articles, and cash. The crime came to light after local residents alerted authorities about suspicious activity near the shop. Based on a complaint filed by the shop owner, Manoj Shah (56), the MIDC police launched an intensive investigation.
Investigation and Arrests
Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal informed reporters on Tuesday that the stolen items included approximately 310 grams of gold ornaments, 1.7 kilograms of silver ornaments, and nearly Rs 5 lakh in cash. Teams from Zone 1 police, MIDC police station, and the Crime Branch's Anti-Extortion Squad initiated parallel investigations, employing technical analysis and confidential inputs.
Within 48 hours of the burglary, the police tracked and arrested the accused: Mustafa Khan (18), a resident of Kamptee; Sumit Suman (18) of WCL Colony; and a minor. Another accused, identified as Sagar alias Liga Waghade of Wadi, who is reportedly a history-sheeter, was also taken into custody during the operation.
Recovery of Stolen Property
During interrogation, investigators learned that the accused had divided the stolen property into four portions at Kamptee after the burglary. Police revealed that one accused attempted to flee towards Ujjain, another towards Bhopal, while the remaining two moved towards Amravati before all were traced and apprehended.
The police recovered around 310 grams of gold ornaments, 1.7 kilograms of silver articles, Rs 49,000 in cash, one mobile phone, and a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime. The total seized property is estimated to be worth around Rs 28.51 lakh.
