HC Issues Notices on Minimum Wage Hike Petition

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the state and central governments in response to a petition challenging the May 22 notification that effected an increase in minimum wages. Justice Jyoti M posted the matter to June 9 for consideration of the interim prayer for a stay sought by the Karnataka Employers’ Association (KEA) and Ethereal Machines Private Limited, Bengaluru.

Petitioners Allege Violation of Court Orders

The petitioners claimed that the authorities issued the notification despite restrictive orders passed by the high court in June and July of the previous year. According to the petitioners, Section 69(1) of the Payment of Wages Act, Minimum Wages Act, Payment of Bonus Act, and Equal Remuneration Act were repealed as of November 21, 2025, effectively removing the concept of scheduled employment.

Notification Contradicts Repealed Laws

Despite the repeal, the authorities issued the notification giving effect to what already stood repealed, the petitioners maintained. They argued that the notification is legally untenable and should be stayed pending final adjudication.
