Somali FIFA Referee Denied US Entry Despite Valid Visa, Sparks Controversy
Somali FIFA Referee Denied US Entry Despite Valid Visa

Omar Artan, a prominent Somali football official and the country's only FIFA World Cup referee, was denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa, according to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The incident occurred at Miami International Airport on June 6, when Artan arrived from Istanbul. CBP initially did not identify the traveler, but the Associated Press later confirmed his identity.

FIFA Confirms Artan's Exclusion

FIFA subsequently announced that Artan would not participate in World Cup preparations and would not officiate tournament matches unless his immigration status changes. The governing body stated it had no role in the immigration decision, emphasizing that host governments determine visa and entry approvals.

Who is Omar Artan?

Artan is one of Somalia's most celebrated football officials and the only Somali referee selected for FIFA World Cup duties. His appointment was widely regarded as a milestone for Somali football and African officiating on the global stage. In 2025, he was named Africa's Best Referee at a Confederation of African Football (CAF) ceremony in Morocco. He has officiated high-profile matches, including fixtures in the CAF Champions League.

His absence is expected to be a significant loss for World Cup officiating, given his reputation as one of Africa's leading referees.

Why Was Omar Artan Denied Entry?

CBP stated that Artan underwent a secondary inspection upon arrival from Turkey. “During processing, the traveler underwent additional inspection, a routine part of CBP's inspection process when officers need to verify information or determine admissibility,” the agency said. After the review, CBP determined he could not be admitted due to vetting concerns. The agency did not specify the nature of these concerns but noted that all travelers, including athletes, coaches, referees, and support staff, are subject to inspection upon arrival.

“CBP officers have the authority to question travelers, conduct inspections, and determine admissibility consistent with U.S. law,” CBP added.

Implications and Reactions

Artan's denial has sparked debate about US immigration policies and their impact on international sports. FIFA reiterated that it is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed that Artan's status will not change at present. The incident highlights the challenges faced by international sports figures navigating complex immigration systems.
