Russian Missiles Kill 4 in Kharkiv, Ukraine; Ceasefire Calls

At least four people were killed and more than 20 injured after Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine's Kharkiv region on Tuesday, according to Reuters. The latest attacks claimed the lives of two men, aged 70 and 56, and two women, aged 22 and 70, in the town of Chuhuiv in northeastern Kharkiv, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported on Telegram. Syniehubov also noted that three children were among the injured.

Attack on Sevastopol

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-installed governor of Sevastopol in annexed Crimea, stated on Telegram that defense systems were repelling a drone attack on the city, which hosts Russia's Black Sea naval fleet.

Zelenskiy's Ceasefire Push

The attacks occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy returned to Kyiv from London, where he secured support from the leaders of Britain, France, and Germany for ceasefire talks. Zelenskiy reiterated his call for a diplomatic ceasefire involving the United States and Europe. He also mentioned that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are prepared to work on a settlement in the coming weeks.

US-Ukraine Negotiations

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has paused US-led negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Reuters reported that US and Ukrainian authorities are still discussing a potential visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Kyiv in the coming weeks. The two envoys have already visited Moscow for talks with Russia, but this would be their first official trip to Ukraine.

International Support

Nordic nations have expressed support for Zelenskiy's urgent ceasefire call, as Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, NATO nations are expanding their presence near Belarus and Russia, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin. Zelenskiy informed UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London that Ukraine needs more missiles for its air defense systems.
