The Himachal Pradesh government has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to foster climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable development throughout the state. The agreement was formalized on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, with Environment Secretary Sushil Singla and UNDP Resident Representative Angela Lusigi signing the document.
Key Focus Areas of the Partnership
The collaboration will concentrate on several critical domains, including circular economy practices, waste management, electric mobility for waste collection, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and the creation of sustainable livelihoods for local communities. A significant emphasis is placed on strengthening ecological governance and ensuring the active participation of women, marginalized groups, and informal workers in development initiatives.
Chief Minister's Remarks
Chief Minister Sukhu expressed that this partnership will integrate global best practices with local solutions, support green livelihoods, and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted the importance of combining international expertise with grassroots efforts to achieve long-term environmental and social benefits.
Safai Mitra Scheme Launch
During the event, the Chief Minister also launched the 'Safai Mitra Scheme,' an initiative aimed at empowering informal waste management workers. The scheme seeks to enhance their dignity, safety, and socio-economic well-being, recognizing their crucial role in maintaining clean and sustainable communities. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the MoU by addressing the needs of vulnerable groups and promoting decent work conditions.
The MoU marks a significant step toward building a resilient and sustainable future for Himachal Pradesh, leveraging UNDP's expertise to tackle environmental challenges while fostering inclusive growth.
