Formula E's Sustainability Initiatives: GEN4, B Corp, and More

Formula E has been at the forefront of sustainable motorsport for over a decade, proving that racing can be both thrilling and environmentally responsible. While the introduction of the groundbreaking GEN4 car has captured headlines, the championship has consistently implemented numerous initiatives throughout each season, both at race venues and beyond. These efforts are making a tangible difference in the world of sustainability.

The GEN4 Car

The Formula E GEN4 car has raised expectations for Season 13, set to debut in December. With a peak output of 600kW (815bhp), the GEN4 is designed to be 100% recyclable or reusable. Its tyres are composed of 65% renewable and recycled materials, while the battery contains no rare earth minerals. Remarkably, despite these eco-friendly measures, the GEN4 is 30% faster than a Formula 1 car.

Better Futures Fund

Formula E identifies local organizations working to bring positive change in each host city and invests directly in them through the Better Futures Fund. This season, the fund grants 25,000 euros to a local organization in every host city, supporting grassroots sustainability efforts.

Driving Force Initiative

Formula E’s major initiative, Driving Force, presented by PIF E360, targets children aged 8-12. This sustainability education program combines digital learning resources, teacher lesson plans, school workshops, and race-week activations to make sustainability and STEM careers accessible, engaging, and relevant. To date, it has reached approximately 70,000 students.

B Corp Certification

Formula E became the world's first sport to achieve B Corp certification this year. This prestigious certification reflects Formula E's core values of sustainability, including environmental standards across race events, community investment programs, worker wellbeing practices, and a commitment to transparency and accountability.

BSI’s Net Zero Pathway

Formula E is also the first sport globally to be certified to BSI’s Net Zero Pathway. It maintains a verified carbon footprint and a management system aligned with the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, the internationally recognized framework for Net Zero strategies. The championship is well ahead in complying with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), ensuring sponsors, teams, partners, and fans can trust the credibility of its climate and sustainability claims.

Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS)

Last year, Formula E topped the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) for the fourth consecutive year, solidifying its status as the world's most sustainable sport. The independent CESG assessment ranked Formula E first overall while also leading the Environmental and Social categories. Among 78 organizations assessed across 11 countries, Formula E achieved a score of 85/100, outperforming the sports average by almost 30 points.
