AMU Joins UP Clean Air Project to Fight Pollution

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh Clean Air Management Project (UPCAMP) Authority to collaborate on scientific, technical, and institutional initiatives aimed at improving air quality and advancing climate action across the state. The agreement was formalized in Lucknow in the presence of Hekali Zhimomi, Principal Secretary of the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Department of the Uttar Pradesh government, and B Chandrakala, CEO of the UPCAMP Authority.

Key Signatories and Roles

Professor Sohail Ayub from AMU's Department of Civil Engineering signed the MoU on behalf of the university. Additionally, he has been appointed as the Environmental and Social Focal Officer for the project. In this capacity, he will oversee the implementation of the initiative at AMU under the guidance of the university administration.

About UPCAMP

UPCAMP is a World Bank-supported initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government designed to tackle air pollution through a coordinated, multi-sectoral strategy. The partnership with AMU is anticipated to strengthen research, capacity building, technical cooperation, and knowledge exchange, while also contributing policy inputs for effective air quality management.

Expected Outcomes

Professor Ayub stated that this collaboration will allow the university to leverage its academic expertise and research capabilities to address pressing environmental challenges and promote evidence-based solutions. The MoU is expected to foster joint efforts in monitoring air quality, developing mitigation strategies, and enhancing public awareness about air pollution and climate change.
