Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) in Vadodara has rolled out a 'No Vehicle Day' initiative every Monday across its campuses, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for fuel conservation. The university has urged students and staff to leave their personal vehicles at home and adopt greener modes of travel such as cycling, walking, or public transport.
Circular Issued by Registrar
In a circular issued by Registrar Prof K M Chudasama, the university explicitly asked students and employees to refrain from using personal vehicles on Mondays. Instead, they are encouraged to opt for cycling, walking, or public transport to commute to the campus. The initiative aims to reduce fuel consumption, promote environmentally responsible conduct, and instill sustainable habits among the university community.
Inspiration from PM Modi's Appeal
The circular stated that the decision was inspired by the Prime Minister's appeal to cut India's dependence on imported petrol and diesel. It noted that rising fuel costs place a heavy burden on the national economy. The university also cited the Gujarat governor's appeal to universities to adopt fuel-saving steps that build environmental awareness and civic responsibility among youth.
Broader Sustainable Practices
Beyond the weekly No Vehicle Day, MSU has encouraged carpooling, cycling, and the use of public transport on other working days as well. The circular has been forwarded to deans, principals, directors, department heads, wardens, librarians, and administrative heads to ensure effective implementation. The university appealed to students and staff to adopt fuel- and energy-saving practices in daily life, emphasizing that small individual efforts can add up to significant national savings and environmental protection.
Context of Higher Education Institutions in Gujarat
The decision comes amid a broader push by higher educational institutions in Gujarat to promote sustainable commuting and curb fuel use. For instance, Sardar Patel University in Vallabh Vidyanagar introduced free bus services for employees living in the staff colony and encouraged teaching and non-teaching staff to use public transport and carpool where feasible. Similarly, Gujarat University has been promoting fuel-saving measures on its campus.
This initiative by MSU is expected to set a precedent for other institutions to follow, contributing to the national goal of reducing fuel dependency and promoting environmental sustainability.
