Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Yogesh Dhingra has accused the BJP-led Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh of repeatedly exploiting citizens under the pretext of implementing smart parking systems. Dhingra, who also serves as the party's chief spokesperson, stated that parking rates were increased based on promises of enhanced smart parking amenities, yet the corporation has failed to deliver these facilities.
Fee Hikes Without Justification
The MC raised parking charges for four-wheelers from Rs 10 to Rs 14, and for two-wheelers from Rs 5 to Rs 7. According to Dhingra, the civic body and the Chandigarh Administration ignored the AAP's proposal to make parking free for city residents and instead generate revenue through advertisements, similar to the model used in commercial areas of Sectors 22 and 35.
New Proposal to Quadruple Rates
Dhingra highlighted a new proposal to quadruple parking rates at five busy market areas, calling it an act of picking the pockets of Chandigarh residents. He asserted that the MC must first provide the promised smart parking facilities to justify the previous fee hike before considering any further increases.
The councillor's remarks come amid growing public discontent over rising parking costs and inadequate infrastructure. He urged the corporation to focus on transparency and citizen welfare rather than imposing arbitrary charges.
