A seemingly harmless late-night food order turned into a distressing experience for a young woman, sparking a conversation about safety and privacy in online food delivery. The incident, shared on LinkedIn by user Aanya Wig, highlights how delivery personnel's access to order details can lead to uncomfortable situations.
The Incident
Around 11 pm, Aanya re-ordered paan after dinner and stepped outside alone to collect the delivery. The delivery partner first asked if she was the one who placed the order. "I didn't engage," she wrote, explaining she was alone. While handing over the packet, the rider commented on her being "a girl and of this age" ordering paan, leaving her feeling unsafe.
Privacy Concerns Raised
Questioning the rider's access to her order details, Aanya wrote, "How does your delivery partner have any authority to see what I've ordered, make a comment and pretend as if he has some right (or say) in what I order and don't?" She also worried about reporting the incident, noting that while a complaint could lead to disciplinary action, the rider already knew where she lived. "Once I lodged a complaint I wondered what the repercussions would be for me?" she added, "If anything happens to hurt his ego, he knows exactly where I stay."
Call for Action
Aanya tagged Zomato in her post, urging the company to sensitize its delivery partners and improve customer safety measures. Zomato responded, "Hi Aanya, please DM us your order ID and we will look into this on priority."
The incident underscores the need for stricter privacy protocols and better training for delivery personnel to ensure customer safety and comfort.
