A CISF constable has fallen victim to a cyber fraud, losing Rs 95,668 from his bank account after an unidentified fraudster allegedly hacked his mobile phone. The incident was reported on Wednesday by a Mumbai police official.
Incident Details
The constable, posted at the CISF office in the Mahim police colony, noticed unusual activity on his phone on Saturday. The device began resetting itself automatically, and all installed applications were being deleted without his intervention. After some time, the phone restarted and resumed normal functioning, leading him to believe it was a temporary glitch.
Discovery of Fraud
Upon reinstalling the PhonePe application, the constable checked his bank account balance and discovered that Rs 95,668 had been debited without his authorization. He immediately contacted his bank and requested that his account be blocked.
Bank authorities informed him that his mobile phone appeared to have been compromised, allowing cyber fraudsters to gain access to his account and transfer money through online transactions.
Legal Action
The constable subsequently contacted the cyber helpline and lodged a formal complaint with the Mahim police. An FIR has been registered under charges of cheating and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. An investigation is currently underway.
