Kick streamer Oblivion is facing widespread criticism online after a recent livestream in Japan escalated into an uncomfortable confrontation inside a convenience store. The incident occurred on June 8 while Oblivion was streaming alongside boxer Ryan Garcia. During the broadcast, the streamer entered a Family Mart store accompanied by a cameraman. Within seconds, a store employee confronted him and swiftly escorted him out of the premises.
The situation continued outside the store, where the worker held onto Oblivion and contacted the police. The streamer and his companions appeared confused about the reason for the confrontation. However, the store employee was clearly upset that a camera had been brought into the store without prior permission. Clips of the encounter quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread discussion among viewers and raising questions about streaming etiquette abroad.
Comparison to Johnny Somali After Filming Dispute
When police arrived at the scene, they reportedly explained why the store employee had reacted so strongly. In Japan, filming people without their consent can raise significant privacy concerns. Many businesses also have strict rules about recording inside stores, especially when employees and customers may inadvertently appear on camera. According to clips from the stream, the shopkeeper told authorities that he did not appreciate the streamer suddenly entering the store while filming. Although the encounter created tension, Oblivion was eventually allowed to leave and later rejoined Ryan Garcia.
As videos of the incident circulated online, numerous social media users began comparing Oblivion to controversial streamer Johnny Somali. Somali gained notoriety for creating disturbances during his travels in Japan and South Korea, which led to legal troubles and public backlash. Some viewers felt Oblivion’s actions reminded them of those past incidents, while others argued that the situations were not directly comparable.
Previous Incident Involving Ryan Garcia
The controversy came only a day after Ryan Garcia experienced a similar issue in Japan. On June 7, clips spread online showing a 7-Eleven employee becoming upset after Garcia filmed him. That particular incident also sparked discussions about the importance of respecting local traditions and maintaining privacy when conducting livestreams from overseas.
Japan continues to be a top destination for IRL creators due to its bustling cities, distinctive culture, and large number of internet users. However, incidents in which livestreamers get into trouble keep fueling debates about proper etiquette when streaming and respecting local merchants.
Oblivion’s brief detour to the Family Mart ended up becoming a highly viral topic once again, highlighting how streamers are expected to conduct themselves abroad.
