Kerala Minister Unveils Plan to Clean Ashtamudi Lake

Kollam: Tourism Minister P C Vishnunath has announced that steps will be taken to free Ashtamudi Lake from waste pollution and ensure its cleanliness as part of a broader tourism development initiative in Kollam.

Permanent Mechanism for Waste Removal

During a visit to the DTPC boat jetty near the KSRTC bus stand, the minister stated that a permanent mechanism would be put in place to remove waste accumulating in the area and maintain the cleanliness of the lake and its surroundings. He also unveiled plans to establish a sewage treatment plant and modernise tourist amenities, including a tourist information centre and public toilets. The existing commercial establishment functioning within the information centre will be relocated, while a dedicated system will be introduced to ensure regular maintenance and sanitation.

Stringent Measures Against Waste Dumping

The minister called for stringent measures by the ports department to prevent waste dumping into the lake. To facilitate the smooth movement of vessels and revive the Kollam-Alappuzha inland waterway, dredging work will be undertaken at the boat jetty.

Waterfront Promenade and Long-Term Development Plan

As part of the tourism development project, the walkway from the boat jetty to Ashramam will be upgraded into an attractive waterfront promenade. Vishnunath said a comprehensive long-term development plan would be prepared by coordinating the efforts of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), district administration, and various government departments. The minister emphasised that the Ashtamudi-centred tourism project would be completed at the earliest.

Project Cost and Components

The project, extending from the DTPC centre to Ashramam, is estimated to cost Rs 59 crore and includes the development of a marina, a Punarjani interpretation centre and park, an adventure park, a lakeside restaurant, and a biodiversity walkway. According to officials, the project will showcase Kollam’s historical heritage and ecological diversity while linking major tourism destinations such as Thenmala, Jatayu Earth’s Center, Meenpidippara, and Sambranikodi. Improved transport connectivity from urban areas, including Chinnakada, to the project site will also be developed.

Vishnunath said the initiative would help transform Kollam into one of Kerala’s premier tourism hubs.
