Delhi HC Issues Notice to Centre and CBSE Over Class 12 OSM Evaluation System
The Delhi High Court has sought responses from the Central government and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) regarding a petition that challenges the newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for evaluating Class 12 answer sheets. The petition, filed by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), highlights several discrepancies in the evaluation process, including unreadable scans, missing pages, improperly scanned answer sheets, and alleged evaluation errors.
Key Demands of the Petition
The NSUI has requested the court to direct CBSE to grant compensatory marks to students who were adversely affected by these technical glitches. Additionally, the plea seeks an extension of the re-evaluation window, proposing that the portal remain open for another month to allow affected students to apply for re-evaluation of their answer sheets. The organization argues that the current system has caused undue stress and potential loss of marks for many candidates.
CBSE's Response in Court
During the hearing, CBSE informed the court that student grievances are already being addressed through existing mechanisms. The board stated that it has established procedures to handle complaints related to scanning errors and other issues. However, the petitioners contended that these mechanisms are insufficient and that many students have not received timely redressal.
Next Hearing Scheduled
The court has listed the matter for further hearing on June 12, 2026. Until then, the Centre and CBSE have been directed to submit their detailed responses to the allegations raised in the petition. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the OSM system, which was introduced to streamline the evaluation process but has faced criticism over its implementation.
This development comes amid a broader debate over the use of technology in educational assessments, with stakeholders calling for greater transparency and accountability in the evaluation process.
