Celebrations marking Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph turned violent in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool and parts of Hyderabad, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge to control the unruly mobs. The incidents occurred late on Sunday night, soon after RCB secured the coveted title, triggering widespread jubilation among fans that quickly escalated into vandalism and public disorder.
Vandalism in Kurnool
In Kurnool, a large group of fans gathered at the Raju Vihar Center, blocking traffic and causing a major disruption. Eyewitnesses reported that some individuals hurled stones at a parked private bus, shattering its windows and causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The bus, which was stationary at the time, bore the brunt of the fans' aggression, with broken glass scattered across the road. Local authorities were alerted, and police personnel arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd.
Police Action
The situation escalated when the mob refused to vacate the area despite repeated warnings. Police resorted to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Several individuals were detained for questioning, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators. No injuries were reported from the incident, but the damage to public property has raised concerns about fan behavior during celebrations.
Hyderabad Incidents
Similar scenes of violence were reported in parts of Hyderabad, where RCB fans took to the streets in large numbers. While most celebrations were peaceful, a few groups engaged in stone-pelting and road blockades, forcing police to intervene. Authorities have urged fans to celebrate responsibly and avoid any actions that could lead to legal consequences.
RCB's Historic Win
RCB's victory in the IPL final was a historic moment for the franchise and its loyal fanbase. The team, led by Faf du Plessis, defeated the Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final, ending a long wait for the title. However, the violent turn of events in Kurnool and Hyderabad has cast a shadow over the celebrations, with local authorities vowing to take strict action against those involved in vandalism.
Police have increased patrolling in sensitive areas and are monitoring social media to prevent any further unrest. Meanwhile, RCB management has appealed to fans to maintain peace and enjoy the victory in a sportsmanlike spirit.
