Chennai Speaker Drops Disqualification Action Against 21 AIADMK MLAs
No Disqualification for 21 AIADMK MLAs: Speaker

Chennai: Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced on Tuesday that no disqualification proceedings would be initiated against the 21 AIADMK MLAs who voted against the party whip's directive. These legislators were among the 25 who supported the TVK government during a confidence motion. The remaining four MLAs have resigned from their posts and joined the TVK.

Speaker's Decision

“After receiving a letter from AIADMK General Secretary Palaniswami stating that he had accepted the apologies of the 21 MLAs for voting against the party whip and requesting that no action be taken against them under the anti-defection law, I have decided not to proceed against them,” the Speaker said, referring to a communication from the AIADMK leader dated May 13.

Background

The 21 MLAs had defied the party whip during the confidence motion, which was a crucial test for the TVK government. The Speaker's decision comes after the AIADMK leadership chose to forgive the lawmakers rather than pursue legal action under the anti-defection law.
