In a refreshing development, the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) has decided to launch an initiative to explore possibilities of averting accidents during fireworks displays by making them more visually impressive and less noisy in temples under its jurisdiction.
Meeting Scheduled for June 8
Devaswom President K Ravindran announced that a meeting of office-bearers from various temples and devaswom officials will be convened on June 8 to discuss strategies to make fireworks displays less noisy and more visually captivating.
The government had asked the devaswom to identify methods to prevent fireworks-related accidents following an explosion at a unit engaged in fireworks manufacturing for Thrissur Pooram. The accident at Mundathicode on April 22 claimed 16 lives and injured many others.
Modern Methods Under Consideration
Ravindran stated that the meeting will discuss modern methods of fireworks production and displays available in different parts of the country and abroad. Fireworks displays focusing on colors rather than noise are already being held in countries like the UAE. He noted, "We are holding this meeting as a preliminary step. We may not be able to usher in such changes overnight. Much needs to be done before we can conduct a less hazardous fireworks display."
Hailing the initiative, Secretary of the Heritage Animal Task Force V K Venkitachalam said the development indicates that devaswom officials are now realizing the importance of introducing more safety features in fireworks displays.
