Two Arrested in Trichy After Violent Attack on Devotees During Pilgrimage
In a shocking incident of violence during a religious pilgrimage, two people have been arrested and authorities are actively searching for two additional suspects for their alleged involvement in the attempted murder of two individuals. The violent clash erupted among devotees on a foot pilgrimage near Trichy on April 15, resulting in serious injuries to the victims.
Details of the Pilgrimage and Violent Confrontation
According to police sources, the victims, identified as M Veeramani, aged 25 from Big Bazaar, and N Haris, aged 19 from Mannarpillai Street, were undertaking a foot pilgrimage to the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple. They had embarked on their journey on the night of April 14, walking as part of their devotional practice.
The situation turned violent around 1:30 AM on April 15 when Veeramani reportedly collided with a group of other devotees who were adorned with ritual piercings. This accidental collision occurred near the Trunk Road close to Thiruvanaikoil, sparking immediate tension.
Offended by the physical contact, the other devotees engaged in a heated verbal altercation with Veeramani and Haris. The confrontation quickly escalated beyond words when some individuals from the group brandished sharp weapons and launched a brutal attack on the two pilgrims.
Severe Injuries and Police Investigation
Both Veeramani and Haris sustained serious injuries during the assault, with wounds primarily concentrated on their heads and hands. They were rushed to the Trichy government hospital where they received emergency medical treatment for their injuries.
Following a formal complaint lodged by Veeramani, the Srirangam police launched a comprehensive investigation into the violent incident. Investigators obtained crucial footage from surveillance cameras installed near the Trunk Road area, which helped them identify the individuals responsible for the attack.
On Tuesday, police made significant progress in the case by arresting two suspects:
- B Raja, aged 29

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Manhunt
The arrested accused were presented before a magistrate and subsequently remanded to judicial custody as the legal process moves forward. However, the investigation remains active as police continue their search for two additional suspects believed to be involved in the attack.
Police have identified the wanted individuals as Velmurugan and Srikanth, and authorities are conducting extensive operations to locate and apprehend them. The violent nature of the incident during what should have been a peaceful religious pilgrimage has raised concerns about safety during such devotional practices.
The Srirangam police have assured the public that they are pursuing all leads and utilizing available resources to ensure all those responsible for the attack are brought to justice. The case highlights the importance of maintaining peace and security during religious gatherings and pilgrimages that attract large numbers of devotees.
