Shimla Police Intensifies Anti-Drug Operations with Record Arrests in 2026

The Shimla district police have announced a significant escalation in their efforts to combat drug trafficking, reporting a total of 27 arrests under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act so far this year. This figure represents the highest number of arrests recorded in the last five years, marking a substantial increase from previous periods.

Comparative Arrest Data Shows Sharp Rise

During the corresponding timeframe in 2024, authorities made only four arrests, while in 2025, the number rose to nine. The dramatic jump to 27 arrests in 2026 underscores a more aggressive and targeted approach by law enforcement agencies in the region.

Major Drug Networks Dismantled Across Multiple States

In a parallel development, the police have successfully dismantled 19 interstate and international drug networks that were operating from various locations, including Nepal and Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. This marks a sharp increase from just one network in 2024 and four in 2025, highlighting the expanding scope of the crackdown.

Notable Seizures and Arrests in High-Profile Cases

Among the most prominent cases is the seizure of commercial quantities of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) valued at approximately Rs 1 crore. This operation led to the arrest of seven individuals, including four police personnel, indicating the involvement of insiders in the drug trade.

Additionally, a drug trafficking network based in Ambala was busted, resulting in the confiscation of 288 grams of heroin. In another significant operation, the police seized around 11.5 kg of opium that had been smuggled from Nepal, along with the recovery of Rs 12 lakh in cash and the arrest of four persons.

Key Arrests and Border Operations

The kingpin of the interstate Shahi Mahatma gang, who had been absconding for one and a half years, was also apprehended during this period. Furthermore, the police conducted targeted operations along the India-Nepal border, leading to the arrest of several drug traffickers attempting to exploit this route.

Strategic Shift in Policing Focus

Officials have emphasized that their focus has shifted from targeting small peddlers to concentrating on major suppliers, financiers, and network operators. This strategic change aims to disrupt the core infrastructure of drug trafficking organizations, thereby having a more lasting impact on the narcotics trade in the region.

The intensified efforts by the Shimla police reflect a broader commitment to curbing drug-related activities and ensuring public safety through rigorous enforcement of the NDPS Act.
