Kerala Judicial Commission Rules Out Firecrackers Ban After Thrissur Blast

In a significant development, former Kerala High Court judge Justice C N Ramachandran Nair, appointed to lead a judicial probe into the devastating blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathicode, Thrissur, has clarified that the commission will not recommend a ban on firecrackers. Instead, the focus will be on suggesting changes to their pattern to enhance safety and prevent future tragedies.

Commission's Mandate and Government's Intent

Justice Nair was appointed as a one-member commission following a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan earlier on Wednesday. The government's primary intention in establishing this commission is to ensure that such a disaster does not recur. "Many people died in the Thrissur fireworks blast, and we hope such an incident never happens again," Justice Nair stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for preventive measures.

Balancing Tradition and Safety

Justice Nair highlighted the cultural significance of fireworks, noting that they contribute to the vibrancy of temple festivals and are celebrated worldwide. He referenced practices in China, where the emphasis is more on visual effects rather than loud explosions. "Therefore, it may be possible to modify the pattern of fireworks. We will examine this and provide recommendations," he added. However, he made it clear that the commission is not intended to recommend a prohibition on fireworks, which attract people and make festivals vibrant. "It would not be appropriate to ban or completely stop them," he asserted.

Focus on Pattern Modification

The judicial probe will delve into the specifics of fireworks manufacturing and usage, with an eye toward implementing safer alternatives. By examining international models and local practices, the commission aims to propose modifications that reduce risks without compromising the festive spirit. This approach seeks to address safety concerns while respecting cultural traditions, ensuring that future celebrations are both joyful and secure.

As the investigation progresses, stakeholders await detailed recommendations that could reshape fireworks regulations in Kerala, potentially setting a precedent for other regions facing similar safety challenges.
