Bar Council of Delhi Elections Spark Major Traffic Disruptions in Central Delhi

The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) elections commenced on Saturday, witnessing a substantial turnout of advocates at the Delhi High Court complex. This significant event has led to extensive traffic congestion, particularly affecting areas around India Gate and Mathura Road, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.

Heavy Traffic and Long Queues Reported

Visuals from the vicinity revealed long queues of vehicles stretching near the high court and adjacent roads in central Delhi. Lawyers, clad in their characteristic black coats and white shirts, were observed walking in groups, while numerous cars were parked along the roadside, exacerbating the traffic situation. The congestion prompted some commuters to voice their frustrations on social media platforms.

One user highlighted the chaos, stating, "Massive traffic jam around India Gate, Patiala House, Hon'ble Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court just because of the Bar Council of Delhi election."

Delhi Traffic Police Issues Detailed Advisory

In anticipation of the high voter turnout, Delhi Traffic Police has released a comprehensive advisory to manage the situation. The polling for 25 members of the council is being conducted inside the high court complex from 9 AM to 6 PM on February 21, 22, and 23.

To facilitate the election process, Shershah Road was closed from the India Gate and Mathura Road sides during polling hours. On Saturday alone, authorities towed approximately 40 vehicles and issued several challans as police enforced strict no-parking regulations and implemented diversions at key junctions in the area.

Key Roads to Avoid and Diversions in Place

Several arterial roads have been identified as stretches to avoid during the three-day election period. These include:

  • Tilak Marg
  • C-Hexagon near India Gate
  • Zakir Hussain Marg
  • Shershah Road
  • Purana Qila Road

Diversions have been established at critical junctions such as Tilak Marg-Bhagwan Dass Road, Purana Qila Road-Mathura Road, and Shershah Road-Mathura Road to alleviate traffic flow.

Parking Challenges and Police Appeals

While designated parking areas were arranged at the zoo parking and gate no. 5A of the National Stadium, many voters opted to park along the roadside, contributing to the congestion. A police officer emphasized the importance of responsible parking, urging drivers to utilize authorized spots.

"Drivers also have a responsibility to use the authorised parking areas, and we urge everyone to park only at the designated spots," the officer stated.

The ongoing elections continue to impact traffic patterns in central Delhi, with authorities working to minimize disruptions while ensuring a smooth voting process for the legal community.
