Chennai: Tamil Nadu is set to become the first state in India to deploy drone-based patrols aimed at preventing crimes against women, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced on Tuesday. Speaking after inaugurating the Singappen Special Force at Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, Vijay reiterated his government's unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy toward offenses against women and children, underscoring that ensuring their safety remains a top administrative priority.
Government's Stance on Women's Safety
The chief minister emphasized that a state's true success is measured not merely by economic growth but by how it treats women and ensures their security. He linked crimes against women to the growing menace of drug trafficking, pledging strong measures to dismantle drug networks and improve overall law and order. Vijay warned that strict action would be taken against anyone threatening women's safety, with chargesheets filed swiftly while safeguarding the innocent from wrongful punishment.
Investment in Singappen Special Force
For the first phase of the Singappen Special Force, the government has allocated over Rs 354 crore. The second phase will create 2,500 new posts exclusively for the force, which will be equipped with modern vehicles, advanced equipment, and technological tools. The chief minister stated that the new force would bolster existing women-safety mechanisms, focusing on preventive policing to curb stalking, sexual harassment, repeated targeting of women, trafficking attempts, harassment in public places and buses, and other crimes against women.
Broader Context
This initiative marks a significant step in leveraging technology for public safety. The drone-based patrols are expected to enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities, setting a precedent for other states. The announcement comes amid growing concerns over women's safety in India, with the government aiming to create a deterrent effect through visible and proactive policing measures.
