India and Israel share robust ties rooted in common democratic values and a united stance against terrorism, stated External Affairs Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh while addressing Israel's 78th Independence Day celebration in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
Singh highlighted the expanding collaboration between the two nations in sectors such as security, technology, and innovation. He extended warm greetings on behalf of the Indian government and people, acknowledging Israel's remarkable resilience and contributions to global development since its establishment in 1948.
"Israel's achievements in technology, agriculture, water management, healthcare, research, and entrepreneurship have earned worldwide recognition and benefited civilizations globally. These accomplishments reflect the strength of its democratic institutions and commitment to national development, values that resonate with India's own aspirations and form the foundation of our partnership," Singh said.
Shared Fight Against Terrorism
Both countries have suffered from terrorism and remain dedicated to strengthening international efforts to combat it, Singh emphasized. He reiterated India's unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all forms and expressed solidarity with Israel following the October 7, 2023 attacks. He also appreciated Israel's support after the terrorist incident in Pahalgam.
"Perpetrators, organizers, supporters, and sponsors of terrorism must be held accountable. There can be no justification for acts of terror. India remains committed to strengthening global cooperation against terrorism and values close collaboration with Israel in addressing shared security challenges, including counter-terrorism and cybersecurity," Singh added.
Support for Peace in West Asia
Singh underlined India's advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy in West Asia amid ongoing tensions, emphasizing civilian protection and the importance of safe maritime navigation for global trade. He expressed hope for de-escalation and peaceful resolution through diplomatic efforts.
"India will continue to support efforts aimed at achieving durable peace and stability. Our partnership with Israel is vibrant and forward-looking, founded on mutual trust, shared democratic values, and converging interests," he said.
Elevation to Special Strategic Partnership
Singh noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Israel elevated bilateral ties to a "Special Strategic Partnership," adding fresh momentum to cooperation. Over 15 agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed to deepen collaboration for mutual benefit.
Israeli Ambassador's Remarks
Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar, also present at the event, described Israel as facing a "defining moment" but expressed confidence in overcoming challenges. Referring to the October 7 attacks, he affirmed Israel's resilience and the strength of its society and economy despite ongoing threats.
"Almost three years since the atrocious attack on October 7, 2023, Israel is facing a defining moment. As we celebrate independence, Israel is being tested again by forces that wish to destroy us. Israel has proven its resilience, and I have no doubt we will prevail. Our brave warriors are systematically removing military threats while our citizens make our economy thrive," Azar said.
He highlighted the growing ties with India, noting PM Modi's visit and the elevation to a Special Strategic Partnership with 18 cooperation agreements. "Despite geopolitical circumstances, we are deepening defence cooperation and expanding into new areas like critical infrastructure and emerging technologies. Our region has much to benefit from India's rise," Azar added.
