Trichy: The Trichy corporation conducted its maiden blood donation camp on Tuesday at the Sanjeevi Nagar Urban Health and Welfare Centre (UHWC), ahead of World Blood Donor's Day, which is observed annually on June 14. The camp was inaugurated by M Karthikeyan, the city health officer (CHO), with the primary aim of meeting the blood requirements of patients at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH).
Preventing Commercialization of Blood Donation
Speaking about the initiative, Senthil Kumar, the medical officer at Sanjeevi Nagar UHWC, emphasized the importance of conducting the camp through the MGMGH blood bank to prevent the commercialization of blood donation. He stated, "To prevent commercialization of blood donation, we conducted the camp through MGMGH blood bank, providing lifesaver at free of cost for the required patients including antenatal mothers to prevent postpartum hemorrhage, thus avoiding maternal deaths." This approach ensures that blood is available to those in need without any financial burden, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women.
Camp Details and Future Plans
After a thorough screening process, a total of 21 individuals donated blood at the camp. The local body has announced plans to organize similar blood donation camps at other Urban Primary Health and Wellness Centres (UPHWCs) across the city in the coming months. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare services and ensure a steady supply of safe blood for medical emergencies and routine procedures.
