A tragic incident unfolded in Pune's Wagholi area on Friday morning when an LPG leak led to a devastating explosion and subsequent fire in a two-storey residential building, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man and serious injuries to two elderly family members. According to officials, the blast occurred around 9:15 am in Khandwe Nagar.
Incident Details
Local residents alerted the fire brigade about a suspected cylinder explosion and fire. Fire tenders from Kharadi, Dhanori, and Yerawada fire stations were promptly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the blaze had engulfed a portion of the first floor. They extinguished the fire using hose reels and transported the injured to a hospital.
Victims and Injuries
The deceased was identified as Pandurang Vishnu Gitte (35). The injured include Vishnu Munjaji Gitte (82) and Vrindavini Vishnu Gitte (60), both of whom sustained severe burn injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Cause of Explosion
A fire brigade official explained that the explosion occurred when a new LPG cylinder was being connected after the previous one had run out of gas. However, a gas leak led to the accumulation of LPG inside the house, resulting in a powerful blast. The fire damaged the hall, furniture, television, electrical wiring, bathroom fittings, and a geyser. Household items in the kitchen, including a refrigerator and other furniture, were partially damaged.
Response and Aftermath
The fire brigade officials worked swiftly to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building. The area was cordoned off, and an investigation into the incident has been initiated. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution while handling LPG cylinders and to ensure proper ventilation to prevent such tragedies.
