Gujarat Considers Adding Millets to PDS and Mid-Day Meals

The Gujarat government is actively evaluating a proposal to incorporate millets more broadly into the state's public distribution system (PDS) and mid-day meal scheme. This initiative aligns with recommendations from the last Chintan Shibir held at Dharampur in Valsad last year.

Expanding Millet Consumption

Government sources indicate that both the PDS and mid-day meal system will be enhanced with the introduction of millets. “The state government has been promoting millet consumption for several years, but this move will significantly increase its reach,” an official involved in the project stated. “Lakhs of beneficiaries are part of these schemes, and millets will add nutritional value.”

Strengthening Nutrition Initiatives

Officials have emphasized the need to bolster nutrition efforts through impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns and improved infrastructure. A series of measures have been proposed to further elevate millet consumption across the state.

Anganwadi Network Expansion

The government is also strengthening the anganwadi network, with plans to construct 930 new anganwadi centers at school locations. This move aims to enhance coordination and service delivery for women and children.

Lifecycle Approach to Nutrition

A “lifecycle approach to nutrition” strategy is being adopted, integrating efforts across all platforms to ensure benefits for all intended beneficiaries. “Coordination issues are being addressed by creating a unified dashboard based on Aadhaar verification for women and child development, health, education, and other departments,” a source said.

Data Integration and Convergence

Key actions under implementation include linking platforms such as the Poshan Tracker and Techo+ for real-time data integration. Another measure is strengthening convergence between the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and the health department through frontline workers. Sources believe these steps will substantially advance the state's goal of increasing millet consumption.
