Actor Sandhya Mridul has spoken out after a young woman working as a domestic help at her mother's home was allegedly denied haircuts at two salons. Mridul expressed anger and hurt over the incident, using her platform to question how domestic workers are treated in daily life. She stated that her mother had to plead before one salon finally agreed to provide the service.
Details of the Incident
According to a report by India Today, Mridul shared a video and wrote, "Every person deserves dignity, respect and kindness." She noted that the young woman, in her 20s, was turned away solely because of her identity. Mridul's mother first took the woman to one salon, where staff refused to cut her hair. They then visited another salon, which also initially refused. Her mother argued, requested, and even offered to pay extra because the young woman felt distressed. Eventually, the salon agreed to give her a haircut. Mridul added that her mother later took the woman out for lunch to console her after the upsetting experience.
Privacy and Broader Issue
Mridul chose not to name the salon, as it is located in a private building where her mother resides. She emphasized the need to protect her mother's privacy and focus on the larger problem. "The issue is much larger than one establishment. It's the mindset," Mridul wrote. In the video, she expressed deep distress, questioning how people could still behave this way. She highlighted spaces where domestic workers face restrictions, including salons and elevators, and noted that residents and customers often create such rules by demanding that workers be kept away from certain areas.
Reactions and Support
The post garnered reactions from several celebrities. Shabana Azmi called the discrimination unacceptable, while Parmeet Sethi wrote, "Really saddened." Mridul, known for her work in films like Page 3, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Saathiya, and TV shows such as Swabhimaan and Koshish, continues to advocate for dignity and respect for all individuals.
