Princess Elizabeth of Belgium, also known as the Duchess of Brabant, has officially graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School, completing her master's degree in public policy. The 24-year-old princess is the eldest of four children born to King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Both of her parents traveled to Boston to attend their daughter's graduation ceremonies.
Graduation Ceremony Highlights
The day was celebrated with an award felicitation for the class of 2026, which continued in memorable fashion on Wednesday, May 27. Families of the students, faculty, and students themselves were present to witness the achievements of the graduating class ahead of the official diploma ceremony. After the commencement, the graduates attended a special session addressed by Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist. Speaking to the class, she reflected upon the significance of the challenges and opportunities facing young leaders in a rapidly changing world.
Royal Presence
Among the attendees, Princess Elizabeth and her family attracted attention as they participated proudly. The Belgian royal was photographed wearing her traditional cap and gown as she posed for commemorative pictures with her parents. Before her graduation, Het Nieuwsblad reported that the princess was planning to take a gap year following her studies at Harvard. She is also expected to take a sailing trip across the Atlantic Ocean.
Academic Journey and Challenges
Princess Elizabeth started her master's at Harvard in 2024, embarking on a multi-year academic journey at one of the world's most prestigious institutions. However, her return was uncertain last year due to President Donald Trump's second inauguration and his decision to impose restrictions on foreign nationals entering the United States on student visas, which raised concerns for thousands of international students, including those at Harvard. Wim Dehandschutter, a Belgian royal journalist, reported that the princess had declined any special facilities or benefits offered to her due to her royal status. She did not want any differentiation between herself and her classmates.
Future as Belgium's First Queen
Princess Elizabeth is on track to become Belgium's first-ever queen if she succeeds her father, King Philippe, to the throne. The 24-year-old princess will make a significant milestone as the first woman to reign as monarch in the country's history. Although voluntary abdication varies across Europe, Belgium has seen a notable tradition of monarchs stepping down. King Philippe became king in 2013 at age 53 after his father, King Albert II, abdicated at 79, citing health concerns.
Speculations about Philippe's abdication in favor of his daughter arose last year. Addressing these, the king mentioned that Elizabeth should focus on her own growth and gain experience before taking on the responsibilities of the crown.
