The Uttar Pradesh government's Nav Bharat Literacy Programme has benefited more than 11.68 lakh individuals over the last four years, officials announced. Implemented under the centrally sponsored Nav Bharat Saksharta Abhiyan, the initiative aims to eliminate illiteracy by enabling individuals aged 15 years and above to read, write, and acquire numeracy skills. Additionally, the programme equips participants with practical knowledge essential for daily life.
Volunteer Network and Training
The campaign relies on a robust network of trained volunteers and master trainers. After receiving specialised training, volunteers conduct literacy classes in both online and offline modes across various districts. These efforts have not only instilled confidence among neo-literates but also significantly expanded the programme's outreach, according to officials.
Assessment Examinations and Success Rates
To date, seven literacy assessment examinations have been conducted, with a total of 13.8 lakh participants. Among them, 11.6 lakh were declared successful. Over the years, participation numbers have steadily increased—from 1.4 lakh in the 2022-23 period to over 4 lakh in the 2025-26 period.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, the state government plans to make the programme more comprehensive this year. Key enhancements include assigning district-level targets, improving training frameworks, and conducting biannual assessments to ensure sustained progress and wider coverage.
