Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) has recorded a notable increase in undergraduate applications this year compared to the previous academic session. The arts faculty received 6,243 applications, marking an increase of 996 from last year's 5,238. Similarly, the science faculty garnered 5,034 applications, up by 1,112 from the previous year's 4,922.
Timely Portal Opening Credited for Surge
The university opened its admission portal on May 20, shortly after the publication of higher secondary results. Faculty members attribute the higher application numbers to this timely launch. Last year, the portal opened in the first week of July, which led to a decline in applications.
Physics professor and JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Ray stated, “The number of applications this year is higher than last year’s because the admission portal opened on time. Last year, due to OBC-related legal problem, the admission portal opened late, which led to dip in admissions.”
History department professor Maroona Murmu added, “The JU admission portal opened this year along with the admission portal of other institutes, like Presidency and the centralised admission portal. Last time, when we began our admission, many students had already sought admission elsewhere. So, I feel that due to opening of the portal on time, the applications are higher this year.”
Comparison with Previous Year
The increase in applications is significant across both major faculties. The arts faculty saw a 19% rise, while the science faculty experienced a 22% jump. This uptick reverses the trend from last year, when delayed admissions resulted in fewer applicants.
JU's decision to align its admission schedule with other institutions appears to have paid off, ensuring that prospective students do not commit elsewhere before JU's process begins.
