In a significant development during the first phase of undergraduate admissions through the centralised portal in Kolkata, female students have surpassed their male counterparts. According to data released by the higher education department, over 2.2 lakh girls have secured admission, compared to 1.6 lakh boys. The merit list for the first phase was published on Tuesday, revealing that out of a total of 9 lakh seats, 3.8 lakh students received seat allotments.
First Day Admissions Reflect Gender Gap
On the inaugural day of admissions, nearly 13,000 students confirmed their seats. Among them, more than 8,000 were female, while over 4,000 were male. The higher education department noted that this trend was consistent with the pattern observed during the form submission phase.
College Principals Applaud Female Participation
College principals expressed admiration for the significantly higher participation of female students in the admission process. Many attributed this to social welfare schemes and scholarship facilities, which have been major drivers for female students, especially from rural areas. Others pointed out that female students tend to pursue core degree courses, whereas male students often lean towards job-oriented programs.
One college principal remarked, "It is a great relief that such a huge number of female students are keen to continue their studies. We need to work together to ensure these students do not drop out midway." Another principal from a Kolkata college added, "It is clear that social schemes and scholarship facilities are providing the necessary financial support so they do not have to depend on their parents to fund their education."
Declining Interest Among Male Students
Several principals also highlighted that declining interest in core science subjects among male students has contributed to their falling numbers. Many male students have shifted to engineering courses or pursued skill-based courses to secure jobs. "Since teacher recruitment exams became irregular, the number of male students has been declining. However, it became remarkably low after the four-year degree programme was introduced, because many are not ready to spend an extra year facing career uncertainty," a principal explained.
Admission Process Timeline
The admission process will remain open until June 15, and the upgraded list will be published on June 20. The first phase of admission is scheduled to continue till June 15.
