Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is leading the largest-ever Indian business delegation to Canada, comprising over 100 senior executives from diverse sectors. The visit aims to accelerate negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The delegation, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Ministry of Commerce, includes representatives from sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, agriculture, and renewable energy. The visit underscores India's commitment to deepening economic engagement with Canada.
CEPA Negotiations
The CEPA, once finalized, is expected to significantly enhance bilateral trade, which currently stands at around $8 billion annually. Key areas of focus include tariff reduction, market access for goods and services, investment protection, and intellectual property rights. Both sides aim to conclude negotiations by the end of 2024.
During the visit, Goyal will hold meetings with his Canadian counterpart, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Mary Ng, as well as provincial leaders and business chambers. The delegation will also participate in business-to-business meetings and sector-specific roundtables.
Opportunities for Indian Businesses
Canada offers significant opportunities for Indian companies in sectors like infrastructure, clean technology, and education. Indian firms are also looking to expand their footprint in Canada's growing market for IT services and pharmaceuticals. The delegation aims to identify new avenues for collaboration and investment.
This visit is part of India's broader strategy to strengthen trade ties with developed economies. It follows recent trade agreements with the UAE and Australia, and ongoing negotiations with the UK and the European Union.
The Indian delegation's size and diversity reflect the growing interest of Indian businesses in the Canadian market. With a large Indian diaspora and strong people-to-people ties, the two countries have a solid foundation for enhanced economic cooperation.
