The Dwarka Expressway, a key infrastructure project aimed at decongesting the Delhi-Gurugram corridor, is set to be extended further to ease the persistent traffic jams that plague daily commuters. The proposed extension, which has been put forward by the Haryana government, seeks to connect the expressway with the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and the upcoming Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi, creating a seamless network for vehicular movement.
Background of the Project
The Dwarka Expressway, also known as the Northern Peripheral Road (NPR), is a 27-kilometer-long, six-lane access-controlled expressway that runs from Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurugram. Originally conceptualized to provide an alternative route to the heavily congested Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, the project has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition issues and other hurdles. However, with the expressway now nearing completion, authorities are looking at ways to maximize its utility.
Proposed Extension Details
The proposed extension will add an additional 12 kilometers to the expressway, linking it to the SPR near Basai and further to the UER-II at Najafgarh. This alignment is expected to provide a direct connection between western Delhi and southern Haryana, bypassing the congested stretches of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and the NH-8. The extension will also include interchanges at key junctions to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
According to senior officials from the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the extension is part of a larger plan to create a ring road around the National Capital Region (NCR). The project is estimated to cost around INR 1,200 crore and is expected to be completed within three years once all approvals are in place.
Benefits for Commuters
Once completed, the extended Dwarka Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Gurugram. Commuters traveling from Dwarka, Najafgarh, and other parts of west Delhi to Gurugram's industrial and commercial hubs will be able to save up to 30-45 minutes during peak hours. The expressway will also serve as a vital link for residents of new sectors in Gurugram, such as Sectors 88 to 115, which are currently underserved by major road networks.
Additionally, the extension is expected to ease congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, which currently handles over 200,000 vehicles daily. By diverting traffic to the Dwarka Expressway, the pressure on the existing infrastructure will be reduced, leading to lower pollution levels and improved road safety.
Challenges and Next Steps
While the proposal has been welcomed by commuters and local residents, it still faces several hurdles. Land acquisition for the extension will require coordination between the Haryana government, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Environmental clearances and public hearings will also be necessary before construction can begin.
The Haryana government has assured that it will expedite the process and has already initiated talks with the concerned authorities. A detailed project report (DPR) is expected to be prepared within the next six months, after which the project will be put up for cabinet approval.
In the meantime, the existing Dwarka Expressway is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year, providing immediate relief to commuters. The extension, once realized, will further enhance connectivity and support the region's economic growth.
